‘The Good Doctor’: ‘Bates Motel’s Freddie Highmore & ‘HTGAWM’ Mystery Man Nicholas Gonzalez Cast In ABC Pilot

Bates Motel star Freddie Highmore is set as the lead The Good Doctor, ABC’s medical drama pilot from House creator David Shore and Hawaii Five-0 co-star Daniel Dae Kim. Also cast in the Sony TV pilot is Nicholas Gonzalez who was introduced in the final minutes of the How To Get Away With Murder season finale last night as a key character to the drama’s mystery.

After taking on killer Norman Bates, who suffers from a dissociative identity disorder, Highmore will be tackling another series lead character with affliction. Written by Shore based on a South Korean format and directed by Seth Gordon, The Good Doctor centers on Dr. Shaun Murphy (Highmore), a young surgeon with Savant syndrome who is recruited into the pediatric surgical unit of a prestigious hospital.

Highmore ‘s Dr. Murphy is a young man with autism, awkward at the best of times, not good with social interaction but possessed of an engaging honesty and directness. A medical savant, Shaun has survived a troubled childhood to become a talented doctor. Gonzalez (Pretty Little Liars, Sleepy Hollow) plays Dr. Neil Melendez, the boss of the surgical residents at the hospital.

Shore and Erin Gunn executive produce via Sony TV-based Shore Z alongside Kim, Gordon, Sebastian Lee & David Kim. Lindsay Goffman of Daniel Dae Kim’s 3 AD co-exec produces.

Bates Motel is now in its fifth and final season on A&E. English actor Highmore is repped by UTA, ARG and Fred Tozcek.

Bates Motel will return for the final season on February 20th at 10/9c.

Bates Motel’s Final Season Gets (Early) Premiere Date at A&E

Bates Motel is reopening a few weeks early.

A&E’s sublime Psycho prequel will kick off its fifth and final season on Monday, Feb. 20 at 10/9c, a rep for the cable net confirms to TVLine. The series has traditionally premiered in mid-March.

The 10-episode swan song “is, in a way, the funniest” season yet, “[with] the most dark comedy,”  showrunner Kerry Ehrin revealed to Yahoo TV, adding, “I would say it still somehow manages to be weirdly life affirming.”

As previously reported, pop star/actress Rihanna will recur in Season 5 as Marion Crane, the iconic, ill-fated character that Janet Leigh played in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. “She was an incredibly sweet and hard working person, and we couldn’t be more thrilled,” Ehrin told Yahoo. “The episodes that she’s in were very much designed to be like a collision between Psycho and Bates Motel, and, really, it’s the first and only time we’ve ever truly stepped into Psycho.”

Bates Motel‘s farewell season will also give fans a front row seat to the “Mother” in Norman’s head (since the one outside his head is, you know, dead). “We’re gonna get to spend more time with her now,” Ehrin told TVLine over the summer at Comic-Con.

Bates Motel Team Talks Season 5’s ‘New’ Mother, ‘Racy’ Norma/Norman Moments and the Series’ Final Scene

Bates Motel fans who are still in mourning over Norma’s demise can rest assured that not only will we get a lot more of Vera Farmiga in Season 5, we’ll also get much better acquainted with the “Mother” in Norman’s head — in essence, a whole new character.

“We’re gonna get to spend more time with her now,” executive producer Kerry Ehrin explained to Michael Ausiello when she and the A&E drama’s cast dropped by TVLine’s Comic-Con studio presented by ZTE. In fact, we’ll get to “know her more intimately.”

Maybe we’ll even get to see the sort of “pretty racy things” that Farmiga said she and Freddie Highmore shot for seasons past that ended up on the cutting-room floor. In particular, she recalled, “there was a really intimate moment that never ended up making” it into the show.

Also in the video Q&A above, Highmore shared his hilarious hope for the series’ final scene, Nestor Carbonell put Ehrin on the spot regarding the casting of a sister for Rihanna’s Marion Crane, and Max Thieriot predicted Dylan’s reaction to Norma’s death.
